Spotlight UB is pleased to present another season of theatrical productions, movies and concerts in the Lucy and Vernon Wright Theater, an acoustically designed space on the fifth floor of the UB Student Center. The diversified programming spans the arts from Dvorak to storytelling, dramatic performance to opera.
Ermerging Voices Project
Every summer, Spotlight UB features new work by campus writers/artists for free on Thursday nights at 7 p.m.
Masterson v. United States, May 31, 7 p.m.
Law faculty member Professor Samantha McDermitt explores The Supreme Court's ruling on transgender issues in this reading of scenes from her most recent play. Featuring a mix of law students and UB staff, the reading will be followed by audience discussion.
BearWorld Test Screening, June 7, 7 p.m.
UB Corporate Communications student Rodolfo Rivera served as the Director of Photography in this poignant documentary about the bear subculture in the international gay community. Spotlight is proud to pre-screen a test viewing of sections of this compelling work that illustrates the differences in the bear communities around the world. Playwrights Lab, June 14, 7 p.m.
Brand new playwrights who developed their work in Kendra Kopelke's fall creative writing course are featured in this evening of stories ranging from the existential to the irreverent. Dustin Carpenter's Heroes examines the drive to super heroism in the lives of two factory workers. Courtney L. Smith's Dangerous Woman exposes holes in the judicial system. Victoria Williams' Do You Accept This Stranger? looks inside the mind of a fundamentalist papering patrons outside The Charles Theatre.
UB alumnus Mary Banks reads excerpts from her book, Street Magic: Stories and Tales, June 21, 7 p.m.
Irish Playwrights Lab
Theatre Events Coordinator and playwright Kimberley Lynne will teach an intensive playwriting residency with teaching artist Joan Weber in Northern Ireland during the month of July. Five UB students will travel with Lynne to Armagh and develop short plays that will be performed in the John Hewitt International Creative Writing Festival, as part of Spotlight's fall season in September and at the Maryland Irish Festival in November. The students will blog tales of workshopping via IEI Media's website.
